Taking Flight

Spring has sprung, and we all know what that means. While September has been famously dubbed as “the January in fashion”, it isn’t until spring of the following year that we actually get to embrace the Spring/Summer fashions showcased the September before. With the endless changing of designers in fashion houses, the fashion industry has never been more exciting and we are all geared up to embrace some big changes within our wardrobes.

Among the collections we are most looking forward to comes from Cuevolution favourite, Cristina Sabaiduc, who returns this season with offerings fit for the goddess in every modern woman. Armed with silhouettes and drapings inspired by the concept of the wing in motion; infused with shades of pale pink, turquoise, powder blue, and peppermint; resulting in the effect of one actually taking flight in these light and airy creations.

To aid in the full effect of the silhouettes, Cristina deployed a variety of fabrics including silk crepe de chines, silk-nylon technical blends, luxurious jerseys and modal cashmere scarves. Signature pieces such as the midi tri-pleat skirt, cropped tie top and pleat bomber jacket are given a breath of life in new adaptations; while classic cuts like the infinity drape dress, cropped back jumpsuit and silk open-back robe remain, but rendered in new prints and fabrication.

The most interesting element of this collection is perhaps the prints. Upon the discovery of a dying dragonfly in the valleys of the Pacific Coast Mountains, with the wings unbroken yet unwiling to give it flight, Cristina was inspired to execute her visual story that is full of structural colouration created through interference between reflections. Working with photographic artist Jo Holland, Cristina came up with these original prints that are designed in house through an analog process.

It seems ironic that something so small, and on the brink of death, can result in something so magnificent and full of life. I believe there is a profound life lesson on perspective somewhere in there, but I will leave it up to you to interpret it as you please, because that is what fashion should make you do: think! But at the same time, don’t take it too seriously. Know that everyone needs some help in taking flight every now and then.
